Javier sat in frustrated silence across from Rachel in the Cove Cat Café. He’d been trying to make conversation, but she’d hardly engaged. Her mind was somewhere else, and though he’d prodded, she apparently had no interest in sharing what was troubling her…which probably included his brief loss of common sense earlier when he’d almost kissed her.

She downed the last of her mocha latte. “Wanna go in the kitty playroom? There’s no one in there right now.”

“Sure.” He looked through the glass window. Cats played, frolicked and slept in, with and on toys, shelves, and various structures designed specifically to appeal to their cat-itude.

He pulled out his wallet, but Rachel stopped him. “Let me get this. You came all the way here to talk to me. It’s the least I can do.”

“It was no trouble. I can’t remember the last time I had a weekend off. Last night was a little crazy, but it was nice spending time with you.”

Rachel bit her lip and looked away. “Yeah.”

There was that aloofness again. Talk to me, Rachel. He threw their trash away while Rachel went to the counter to purchase the admission. She’d always loved cats. Maybe playing with them for a bit would help her feel better.

He followed her into the playroom and slipped a twenty-dollar bill into a donation box. Rachel went straight to a pair of black and white kittens. She tucked her dress around her legs and sat on the floor next to them while they sparred with each other, leaping, rolling and attacking.

Javier chose a low bench off to the side where he could view her face and the kittens. He rested his forearms on his knees and clasped his hands to watch her. Her transformation didn’t take long. The tight set of her jaw loosened, her eyes crinkled with each laugh, and her shoulders relaxed.

She giggled as one of the kittens clawed its way up her sleeve. “Javi, come meet Duchess.” She pulled the kitten off her dress and cradled it like a baby. The feline settled in the crook of her arm and peered up at Javier with light green eyes. A trail of white fur led up her forehead from the left side of her black nose.

Squatting down beside Rachel, Javier brushed a finger through the white fur under the kitten’s chin. “She’s beautiful. Unique. I’ve never seen a cat with a line like that.”

“Mmm.” Rachel stared at the kitten, its purrs increasing in frequency the longer he petted it.

His hand was so close to Rachel’s own chin. He imagined himself crooking a finger under her chin and lifting it to kiss her the way he’d wanted to earlier. Stop torturing yourself. Even if she were to forgive you, you still broke her heart.

“Mrow!” The other kitten stood up on his hind legs and, begging for attention, pawed at Rachel.

The room resounded with her tinkling laughter: Javier’s favorite sound in the world. “Hey, little guy. Let me love on you, too,” she said, reaching for it.
